Helping the Children - Orphanage Nursery (Cuna)

The Baby Nursery  - or Cuna as it is called in Spanish - at Hogar Para Niños is one of the busiest, and one of the most pleasant, areas of the Mission. Newborn babies through two years of age (until potty trained) are cared for in the nursery until they graduate into one of our household families. Since they need 24-hour care, workers are scheduled around the clock. Their care consists not only of feeding, bathing and changing diapers, but also a loving environment where they can experience as normal a life as possible. Our purpose is to give them love, protection, and discipline as needed in the absence of their natural parents.

Each child, though very young, comes to us with a sad history. Some have been abandoned, others abused, and for some it is just impossible for the parents to care for them because of their own illness or hardship. Occasionally, we receive a “true” orphan, whose parents have died. Sometimes children are placed with us until a relative can be found who will care for them.

We can care for a maximum of twelve babies which requires 3 to 4 workers during each shift.  Our volunteers and staff are caring for infants who suffer the ill effects of abject poverty, starvation, and disease. The Nursery is a place of loving and learning for all. Diapers and formula are always needed by the Nursery, and we welcome all donations. We always have need for both long-term volunteers and short-term visitors - from older teens to Grandmas.  They provide the loving hands needed to care for the “little ones.”
