Helping the Poor - Literacy Program

Literacy Sets Free

“Each one teach one.” Frank Laubach

The apostle of literacy, Frank Laubach, provided the vision and impetus for this exciting program. The literacy ministry has the principal objective of teaching the people in the migrant work camps how to read and write. While they attend school, each student at our Bible School is responsible for teaching at least one person. The Bible is the primary textbook.

We are also concerned about academic education, and tutoring is given to help people finish all elementary and junior high school courses. The National Institute for the Education of Adults (INEA), a government agency, provides us with books and materials for this program as well as certification upon completion.

We have made a commitment to God to be concerned with the education of these people, that they may “study to show themselves approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly divining the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15) In time, we believe they will be able to reach higher goals and dreams, and acquire work outside of labor camps.

We have a literacy program at each of our locations.

Our work in Southern Mexico.

Chiapas, the most southern state in Mexico, has become the hotbed for revolution and persecution of evangelicals. Yadira Porras Hernandez, our anointed literacy teacher in Oaxaca, was sent to Chiapas, our newest frontier of ministry.

Dave Yeadon, U.S. Board member, had just finished reading the book, “The Good Seed,” which tells of the Wycliffe work with the Indians in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. These people received freedom only when the Word of God was proclaimed and claimed. It brought victory over evil spells that the local Shamans (witch doctors) had placed on the illiterate people. When they were taught to read their own language then they could read the word of God and have power over Satan. Dave prayed about how he could help these precious people.

Immediately he received a report from Yadira, whose heart’s desire and purpose is to help the Tzotzil Indians of Chiapas. First of all that they might know Christ, and secondly, to teach them the Spanish language. Without the national language, the Tzotzil would always be second-class citizens. Yadira’s goal is to present our literacy project, and then concentrate on discipleship. She knows from experience that out of every 20 people reached, 15 will learn to read and write Spanish in five months, and 10 will accept Christ. Dave and Marilynn Yeadon have committed to help support Yadira’s literacy ministry. She will need additional sponsors.
