ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT

Our annual Alternative Christmas campaign started in October. You can help meet the basic needs of the ministry as well as our surrounding communities in Baja and Oaxaca.

A friend of the ministry included a note with her donation: "This gift is given to further the wonderful work you are doing. It it given in memory of my husband, Reverend Alfred W. Walck and his sister, Amanda M. Walck, parish worker, it is also given in honor of our family of 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

My husband and I were foreign missionaries to Papau New Guinea for 26 years.

We have been impressed with your work and regularly read your newsletter, often sharing it with the family. The grandchildren chose to give toward the peanut butter and milk project. The little ones will enjoy receiving an ornament to hang on their Christmas tree to let them know where their grandfather's memorial was sent.

Thank you for the good work among the children of Baja and Oaxaca."

  • After camp I’m going to be with the Malcolm family in Lolo. They are hosting an evening in their home on Saturday with people who are interested in the ministry.

  • On Sunday I’m speaking in the adult Sunday School class about the ministry, and I’m doing a 10 minute intro to the ministry in their two services. And then that afternoon I’m flying back and will get in to LA around midnight.

JAN AND CARL

Jan Holter was living with Dave and Audrey Taylor in Costa Mesa, CA at the inception of His Ministry. She later married Carl and extended the first invitation to Chuck and me to minister in her home church, Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Morris, IL.  Later she scheduled our itinerary in Illinois and Wisconsin. Jan is facing a critical situation.  She is to undergo surgery in the immediate future for a tumor in her kidney. She needs a miracle. Carl Holter serves on our U.S. board.

CARRIE IRVING

Carrie Irving, FFHM board member, was in a very serious car accident. Only the grace of God could have spared her life. The vehicle was totaled. While being examined they discovered swelling on her brain. They’re believing God for a miracle! The Irvings are in the process of moving to Idaho.

KID'S CAMP

There was a wonderful outpouring of the Holy Spirit at the kid’s camp hosted by the Mission Church. Thank you for praying. Without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit this would just be another camp. More to follow in September’s newsletter.

LARRY AND OLIVE

Larry and Olive Kieler have made countless trips to the Mission.  They recruited young people from all over Canada to join them on an adventure that would change their lives forever.  Larry has been suffering with major heart problems for a number of years.  He will undergo surgery this week. Please pray for a total recovery.

CHARLA

Recently I, Charla, had a minor stroke. I am back in the office and under excellent medical care. Thank you for all those that pray.

BIBLE INSTITUTE STUDENTS

Please continue to pray for the Bible Institute’s outreach in the remote regions of Oaxaca.

THERESA

Although we don’t have a picture to accompany this prayer request, please pray for Theresa Vanderkooi,, who has cancer throughout her body. Theresa is Pete Van Dyken’s sister. The Van Dykens have prepared our Thanksgiving dinner for many years.

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST

Brian Durkin has been a faithful contributor to FFHM for many years and is the son of Jack and Pat Durkin, part of our Friday night prayer group. Brian has a detached retina and will be going into emergency surgery today. Please pray for him.

GEORGE

George Wakeling who previously served on the FFHM board, is the guy we always go to in a time of need. Recently, George was on a Mediterranean cruise and had a fall suffering a broken right hand and injury to his knees, elbow and shoulder. He was just released from a hospital in Corfu and arrangements are being made for him to fly home. Please pray for healing and his safe return.

MARIO (LEFT) BERNARDO (RIGHT)

BIBLE INSTITUTE STUDENTS

Please pray for travel mercies for Mario and Bernardo while driving Maria Villa Pablo's jeep to her in the mountains of Oaxaca. Also for the Bible Institute students who will follow them, driving throughout Mexico for ministry in Oaxaca and Chiapas. The men and the team need protection from all evil.

VIOLIN SOLD

The violin was sold and FFHM will benefit greatly from it's sale.

NORBERTO AND HERLINDA

Herlinda has been part of our mission family for 30 years. She came as a little girl with her parents to the Baja mission where they served for many years. After attending Bible College, Herlinda married Norberto and they returned to serve together in many areas including house parents for 13 years.

The cement roof of their small home has caved in and in serious need of repair. The estimated cost is $5000. We have willing hands for the construction, please pray with us in meeting the financial need.

EMERSYN

John Keller, the brother of Executive Director Janelle Keller, wrote the following:

On Saturday, while at our family’s cottage, our 2 year old daughter Emersyn was the victim of an unprovoked dog bite. Unfortunately the bite nearly severed her lip. She was taken to Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong in Rochester, NY where she received excellent care from a facial trauma team. The Plastic Surgeon was able to do a multi-level repair and was very pleased with how the closure turned out. She continues to deal with a lot of swelling and pain, and the potential for infection is a major concern. Please pray for complete healing for her both emotionally and physically, and for minimal scarring on her beautiful face.

OAXACA MISSION

Progress has been made on getting the corrected documentation of the property here at the mission. Please pray for a good finish to this whole process.

LAURA RODRIGUEZ

Laura, the Oaxaca Mission Administrator, needs to renew her temporary resident visa but so far there have been several obstacles. Please pray for a successful and timely resolution, as she travels to the states soon.

WE ARE IN NEED

A principal that was shared with me many years ago:
“God’s work done God’s way will never lack God’s supply.”  Hudson Taylor
Our finances are at an all-time low. In other words, we are in the red.

When there is a lack, there are three questions to be asked:

  • Are you in God’s will? We are caring for the orphaned, the widow, the hungry, and the prisoner.
  • Do you already have the provision? We have made appropriate cut backs and used all of our resources
  • Is there sin among you? Laura Rodriguez reported, “Our church service in Oaxaca was four hours long because the staff had a time of restoration, confession, and forgiveness. There was healing of hurts and unity. It was powerful.” We continue to pray “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

BIBLE INSTITUTE STUDENTS

Every year our Bible Institute students make a missionary trip to the mainland of Mexico. Throughout the year they raise funds by hosting a “Kicking Chicken dinner” at the Mission in Baja. Our visiting groups are always very generous and this year is no exception. The team leaves on July 10 to visit Juxtlahuaca, Tlacolula, Zacatal (Mixes) and Chiapas. Some are very remote areas and reach the unreached of Mexico. The group sleeps on the floors of churches, under primitive shelters. Pray for their safety, protection, and provision.

NEW WEBSITE

We have launched our new FFHM website! Kristi Garcia has already signed up four new children’s sponsorships. Check it out:  www.ffhm.org

A VEHICLE FOR MARIA

When Mario and the group of Bible Institute students go to Oaxaca, they will deliver this four wheel vehicle, 2009 Jeep, to Maria Villa Pablo working in the mountains. If you should hear shouts of praise, it’s Maria from Juxtlahuaca, Oaxaca.

PROPERTY IN MEXICO

Foundation for His Ministry collaborates with our Mexican corporation Cristo Por Su Mundo (Christ for His World), also a non-profit corporation. So all properties are secure. With the passing of our dear brother in Christ Juan Carrillo, we will have to find a replacement. Pray for God’s choice.

BIG BROTHER ANGEL GABRIEL WITH BABY ALEX FABIAN

Thank you for praying for our Oaxaca missionaries Eugenia and Modesto as they walked through a high risk pregnancy. ELISABETH AND GODFREY

Did you know that Godfrey and Elisabeth Dawkins, missionaries in Kenya, Africa have received designated support through Foundation for His Ministry since 1968 or 1969? The Dawkins’ and their missionaries minister in all public schools in Kenya. Their annual reports are awesome. They sent an urgent prayer request: “Abel and Grace, who work for us, three and a half year old son, little Emmanuel, disappeared April 29th, presumably kidnapped.” Please pray for the victims of these crimes to be set free from oppression, abuse and exploitation. Pray for the Lord to heal them physically, emotionally and spiritually.  (Isaiah 61:2)

MORDECAI

Sandy and Jean Bergeron requested prayer for their grandson Mordecai. He is the sixth child from the right in the family photo. This is the saga of a long heartbreaking tale, but at last Mordecai has been diagnosed with Autism. They will benefit from therapy. The Bergeron’s have been friends of His Ministry for many years and have made numerous trips to the Mission. I often stay with them when in British Columbia.

LITTLE LOST PUP

A praise report from the Disabled Children’s Learning Center: Alan Carlson had a fall and sustained a serious concussion. He is back teaching with Dirk, Mary and our other amazingly capable teachers.

MISSIONARY'S KID NEEDS SUPPORT

Jorge and Gina Gamboa served at the Baja Mission as architect, house parents and supervisors. Then they responded to the call to service at our Student’s Home in Tijuana. Their sons went with them. Isai writes, “I am very thankful for the privilege and blessing God has given us as a family. I am in the last year at the University, studying International Affairs. I have been given the opportunity of going to the embassy of Mexico in the Czech Republic from August 1 to December 1.” Any contribution to cover this young man of promise’s expenses would be appreciated and tax deductible.

SHIRLEY PARKER

One of our faithful children’s sponsors, Shirley Parker underwent surgery for a cancerous tumor behind her eye. She is going through radiation and would appreciate your prayers.

If you'd like to schedule a work group please email Carmen: bajagroups@ffhm.org.

June 2, 2017

Janice Flinn initiated our Prayer and Praise (P&P) letter, sent out every Friday, with the instruction that it be concise and must include a picture. The P&P letter is not a replacement for the newsletter. However, our newsletter is written six weeks in advance and can't contain current information. Therefore, we included the article regarding Juan Carrillo in last week's prayer and praise. His story brought back vivid memories.

Howard writes: "Oh how the property has changed. We were privileged to see it in the beginning and the photos brought back memories."

Charla recalls the collapse of the bridge, "I remember Howard Wedell handling Ham radio calls to people on both sides of the river…wives not knowing where their husbands were, etc.”

HOWARD

Veda Marmion writes: “Beryl and I were there and worked with Juan Carrillo and Elisa, good friends.  We helped in that flood with all those children."

Please pray for Veda who recently had a bad fall. She's in pain and was diagnosed with a lumbar contusion. Thank you so much.
"I know God is able to do exceedingly more than we ask or think…" Eph 3:20

VEDA AND BURL MARMION

CLASS OF 2017, KETTA FAITH VADENBOS

The VandenBos family of Lynden, WA, served at the Baja Mission. Steve, as our builder and Sherry, as our piano teacher and tutor. The VandenBos were strongly lead to adopt Ketta. The following is their letter:

“Dear Chuck and Charla, We are sending you a video of Ketta’s senior violin recital. We hope this is a reminder to you that one of ‘Charla’s Children’ has been given a second chance at life. Praise God! We have seen God’s hand on Ketta’s life since she arrived at ‘our’ orphanage. We thank you for listening to God when he gave you the vision of the field ripe for harvest. Thank you Chuck and Charla! Ketta has been the biggest, most unexpected blessing in our life.  Now we are excited to see where God leads Ketta next.  We are SO PROUD of her.  We hope this video gives you a little window into our life with Ketta and the JOY she has brought our family…”

Nancy Benning represented FFHM at Ketta’s graduation and at her Violin Recital. To God be the Glory!

A MEMORIAL TO JUAN CARRILLO
July 2, 1932 - May 2, 2017

AERIAL VIEW OF THE BAJA MISSION AS IT WAS IN THE 60S AND 70S WHEN THE CARRILLO FAMILY CAME TO THE MISSION

Juan and Elisa Carrillo, parents of six little children, came to us from Camalu, six miles north of the Mission. Could we use this field worker and his wife? They were committed Christians who loved Jesus but they had six young children. We had 48 interned children living in the old casino building and the boys were up in the back of the theater in the stage area. We were desperate for house parents. They were willing to serve.

Juan took care of 23 boys, Elisa did the cooking, the laundry (we did it on washboards then) and the cleaning. The young boys stood in a long line waiting for entry into the dining room. Juan combed each little boy’s hair before they entered.

Never in my life have I seen a couple who worked so hard from dawn into the night. Their family of eight lived in an old trailer between the casino building and the theater. How they all fit in there, only God knows.

The old generator donated by Knott's Berry Farm provided electricity for the buildings. It cost $1/hour for gas. Sometimes we had the funds to operate it and sometimes we didn’t. When we had the funds, it was run from 6pm-8pm. Anything requiring electrical power had to be done between those hours.

The usual dry river overflowed a number of times during those years. An orphanage, Rancho Chilpayates, was built on the banks of the river. Juan Carrillo, Chuck Pereau and his Los Angeles County fire captain friend, Rex Morningstar had to go and rescue the children from the buildings being washed into the river. These men had to wade in waist deep water to make the rescue. They watched trees, the buildings and contents being washed away. The children were taken into the chapel for housing. Our number was now increased to 103 children.

RANCHO DE CHILPAYATES

Toby and Shannon Ray ministered at our monthly Friday night dinner. They were great. Next month Sam Parsons will be celebrating the birth of our nation with a patriotic presentation. Circle July 7th on your calendar.

THE BRIDGE CROSSING THE DRY RIVER WAS WASHED AWAY SEVERAL TIMES

Although middle aged, Juan and Elisa volunteered to serve at our student’s home in Tijuana. We could find no one else to take on this daunting task. They were the perfect host and hostess. On one occasion, they surprised our U.S. bookkeeper, Lorraine Barter, with a birthday party.

juan carillo_lorraine_charla_birthday.png

JUAN AND ELISA HOSTED A BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR LORRAINE BARTER

Shortly thereafter Elisa suffered a heart attack and was taken home,  Juan returned to the San Quintin Valley, where he later married Martha. She was a perfect companion and wife, and later his caregiver.

Juan never complained, he never spoke negatively about anyone; he was always ready to pray. After 33 years of faithful service, he donated the land where Rancho de Cristo is today for a rehab center for men. It was fitting that Hans Benning, the director of the Rancho, represented us at the memorial service.

I cherish my dear faithful brother. How I will miss him. I know Jesus will say, “Well done Juan.”

LEADING WORSHIP

We praise God that one of our little ones who had been abused prior to arriving at our children's home in Oaxaca, is now leading worship.

perterson family.png

ROBERT WOODMAN TEACHING THE CHILDREN

Robert Woodman, our work group coordinator, is taking time out of his very busy schedule to teach our children to play chess. The values of this game are profound. They teach children good competition, reasoning, and strategy. Thank God for Robert Woodman.

CHILDREN'S DAY

Thank you for praying for the Children's Day outreach. More than 1,000 children came for this annual event. The children's praises filled the Mission church. Also, there were 700 children in a migrant camp who experienced a glorious day. And, of course, they were presented the Gospel.

OAXACA

We have a beautiful mission and visitors' center in the "land of intrigue," Oaxaca. A substitute house mom is needed. There is also a need for a cook. We have openings for small work groups in Oaxaca.

LOIS WILSON

Lois Wilson, faithful volunteer, suffered a life-threatening stroke five weeks ago, will be returning to her home in Laguna Woods today. The family thanks you for your prayers.

MARIA VILLA PABLO

Maria has been suffering with a lot of pain near her kidneys this week. The doctors think her sciatic nerve is being pressed and have advised a special diet, exercise, increased fluids and some medicine. Her pain is reduced but the problem is still present and will be an adjustment for Maria because of her demanding ministry schedule.

EUGENIA AND MODESTO WITH THEIR SON

Modesto and his family will be staying at the mission for a month or two because his wife's, Eugenia, pregnancy is high risk and she requires weekly doctors visits. Prayers are appreciated for her and the baby.

MARY PETERSON

In memory of Mary Peterson (3/3/29 - 5/2/17) FFHM Board member emeritus. Mary was a mother of three and a grandmother of many. She accomplished great things for the advancement of the Kingdom of God. Charla has made a practice of making an acrostic as a tribute to those whom she loves.

M - Mary was a wonderful Mother and Merciful. During the time Craig was incarcerated she sent Craig's children a monetary gift equal to that which she gave her children.

A - Mary was Aglow with the Spirit; she had an Administrative gifting and many other attributes also. She was Admired, she was Adored, she was Affectionate, she was Affirming.

R - She was a Reader; she was Real; she was Relational, Reliable, Remarkable, she is Remembered. But the word "Recipe" was meaningful. When we were young women she always talked about the restaurant that she would one day own. She talked about the menu, she talked about the decor. Finally she had a restaurant. About two years later, she said to me, "Well, I have had my restaurant". But there are three other R words: no Reserve; she always gave her all; no Retreat; she did not quit; and no Regrets.

Y - Mary always said Yes. She was Youthful and she was Yielded to God the Holy Spirit.

Please pray for Mary's family and many friends who grieve her loss. Memorials may be sent to Foundation for His Ministry.

A memorial service will be held in Big Fork, Montana.
